The acai berry is known as a super fruit that originates from Central and South America. It is rich with anti-aging and weight loss properties. Some studies have even showed that they contain more antioxidants than most other berries. One thing I love about the acai berry is that it contains Omegas 3, Omega 6 and Omega 9. Plus, with its unique taste you wouldn’t even guess it’s naturally sugar free! It can’t get any better than that.
My husband and I recently went to Kauai to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. While we were there, we made a point to stop at as many juice bars as we could to try the acai bowls. There was one that we tried near the Napali coast that was AH-mazing. I feel like every one of you need to experience the unique flavor of acai. It honestly has no similar taste to any other berry. You have to try it to know what I’m talking about!
The acai bowl is slightly thicker than a smoothie topped with different varieties of fruit, nuts, honey and whatever else you want! Our love for acai bowls originated from when my husband lived in Brazil and he ate acai almost every day while he was living there. He introduced them to me and I immediately became OBSESSED.
Since Kauai, I’ve tried to replicate the taste of the amazing acai bowl I had. The best brand of acai juice is Sambazon. If you are local to Utah, Costco sells it in the refrigerated section. We’ve also bought it at Smiths grocery store.
SIDE NOTE: If you are ever are in Southern California, Sambazon has store locations all along the coast. Whenever we vacation in Newport or Disneyland, we stock the nearest Sambazon location and grab an acai bowl during breakfast or lunchtime!
Since there are so many ways to make a good acai bowl, I will tell you the key ingredients that are in pretty much in any bowl: acai juice, granola, and honey. Instead of having a green smoothie in the morning for breakfast, substitute it for an acai bowl! It literally takes me seconds to whip up. Here is my simple, easy recipe you can follow, but the sky’s the limit with toppings!
ACAI BOWL:
1 1/2 cups acai juice
1 cup plain vanilla yogurt
1 cup crushed ice (to help have a thicker consistency)
1 cup of strawberries
1/2 a banana
1/2 cup of granola (I like the Bare Naked brand Honey Almond granola)
Honey
Blend up the juice, yogurt, crushed ice, strawberries and banana, top with granola and drizzle with honey! Enjoy!
Happy eating!
